Type 2/CCS2 charging plugs
Type 2 is the common plug for AC charging in Australia. CCS2 adds the pins used for DC fast charging.
Type 2 and CCS2 are the charging plugs you’ll see on most new EVs sold in Australia.
A Type 2 connection is used for AC charging. You’ll find it on home wallboxes and many destination chargers at shopping centres, hotels and car parks.
Some public AC chargers have a cable attached. Others are untethered, which means you need to bring your own Type 2 cable.
CCS2 stands for Combined Charging System Type 2. It uses the Type 2 section at the top of the vehicle’s socket and adds two larger pins underneath for DC fast charging.
Public DC fast chargers normally have their own cable, so you do not need to carry a separate CCS2 cable.
CHAdeMO is an older DC plug still found at some Australian charging sites and on a limited number of vehicles. If you’re considering an older or privately imported EV, check its plug before you buy.
Why it matters: the plug determines which public chargers you can use and whether you need to carry a cable. For most new Australian-market EVs, Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for DC is the combination to expect, but always confirm the exact vehicle.
